Be a Voice, Not an Echo

Be a Voice, Not an Echo

Several years ago, I sensed the Spirit of God whispering to me, “Be a Voice…Not an Echo.” As I began to dig into the meaning of this instruction, I looked at the actual definition of echo, which is “a wave that has been reflected by a discontinuity in the propagation medium.” Or, said another way, an echo is a reflection – an old sound that arrives late, with a delay proportionate to the distance it must travel. If many reflections arrive at a listener’s ear they become garbled, indistinguishable one from the other, and the proper term for that is reverberation. I began to understand why the Spirit would say for me to not be an echo.

Emulating someone else’s life, emulating their style, or how they do something – that’s following a formula. Merely copying is not a true expression and it’s unpleasant to the ear of God. Many of us complain about the fact that most music nowadays sounds generic, has a “sameness” about it, and lacks creative originality. If we find the sameness in music unappealing, how much more unappealing would it be to have an entire generation of believers echoing nothing but sameness back at the Father?

What makes an original sound more appealing? What makes the talent of one stand out over another? What makes the style of one stand out among so many? What makes the service of one, seemingly at least, stand out more than another’s? The answer is uniqueness. The key to true creativity is to be as unique as God made you to be. Not to strive for uniqueness but to accept and embrace His unique calling and purpose in and for your life.

We sometimes fear that uniqueness will bring disunity, we think of uniqueness and unity as opposites, but they don’t have to be. The key is to BE who He made you to be, so that when you make a sound it is an original sound, but still ONE with the source of the sound.

Your life in the earth is not meant to be a repetition of sameness, you are NOT a mere reflection of sound! But neither are we to ignore the original voice, author and creator. We must meld together, become one, so that we may live out our life with originality but also unity – connected with the source in such a way that the source is actually using your vocal chords to do His speaking and your talents and actions to reveal the uniqueness that is God Himself.

In Acts 19:11-20 We find the account of the Apostle Paul being so one with God that he is used by God for special miracles.

[KJV] 11 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:
12 So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.
13 Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.
14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.
15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?
16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
17 And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
18 And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.
19 Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.
20 So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.

The Apostle, who was one with the source of miracles, was actually doing miracles. The copy cats who attempted to do what Paul was doing, in their own strength, casting out demons “In the name of Jesus who Paul preaches” got whipped!

We are not to merely reflect the source of our Father’s voice. We are not to be mere reflections of any heavenly thing. We are to be ONE with our Father in Jesus Christ His Son. We are to be ONE with the source! The voice within the voice speaking simultaneously. The Lion of Judah says He will roar out of Zion!
Be a Voice…Not an Echo!
